The Germans arrived on the island of Texel in 1940 and immediately proceeded to convert the “Hotel aan de Groeneplaats” into their center of operations, the so-called Ortskommandantur [local military headquarters]. This is where the Inselkommandant [island commander] had his offices and where wired communications were maintained.
Eingreifsreserve Jagdkommando “Süd” [a special forces unit] was (presumably) quartered in barracks constructed adjacent to Den Burg public cemetery. This army camp included bunkers for the storage of fuel and rations.
Several homes in Stützpunkt Den Burg were requisitioned, particularly in the Kogereind area. This is where the Festungbaudienststelle [fortification construction service] was located, the authority in charge of bunker construction on the island.
